Heater keeps tripping?Identify the trip first.

A reported trip may be a ground-fault device, an overcurrent breaker or an interlock opening the contactor. Identify the device and its fault record before deciding which component to inspect.

  • Identify the protective device
  • Record when it happens
  • Use the equipment instructions

01Keep the fault record before resetting

Record the device that operated, its fault code and whether the event happened at energization or after a period of heating. Note liquid level, flow, inlet/outlet temperatures and any recent element replacement, cleaning or extended shutdown.

Do not use repeated resets or bypassed protection to keep a heater running before the cause is known. Isolate the equipment and establish appropriate maintenance conditions. Live measurements and insulation testing require qualified electrical personnel.

02Different trips point to different checks

Device or fault recordCheck firstDo not assume
Ground-fault or earth-leakage protectionWater ingress, insulation condition, cables and leakage in individual branchesAn element that still produces heat is not necessarily electrically sound
Overcurrent breakerActual load, rated voltage, connections, shorts and terminal conditionA larger breaker is not a diagnosis
High limit, low-level or low-flow interlockActual level and flow, sensors, deposits, valve positions and control outputA released contactor does not prove that the breaker tripped

03Why check for moisture after storage?

Some tubular elements use magnesium oxide insulation. Moisture associated with storage or terminal sealing can lower insulation resistance. A new or stored assembly therefore cannot be cleared for service by appearance alone.

Use the equipment instructions for test voltage, acceptance criteria, electronic components that must be disconnected and any permitted drying procedure. A resistance value quoted online is not a universal release criterion. Do not force power onto an unverified assembly as a way to dry it.

04For a trip after heating, review the process too

Check that the active heated length stays submerged at the lowest operating liquid level. In a circulating system, verify actual flow; pump noise does not establish flow through the heater. Deposits, a closed valve, a displaced sensor or sustained control output can all change temperature conditions.

Keep the electrical findings with the process records. Replacing an element without correcting the conditions that exposed it or overheated it leaves the cause unresolved.

05What to send with a service request

Include unit and element nameplates, protective-device model and photographs, fault codes, recent changes, cold/hot inspection findings and level/temperature trends. State the test conditions and instrument settings with each measurement. If data are missing, ask for a check plan rather than ordering a replacement from the word “tripping” alone.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01Should I replace the earth-leakage device?+

Discuss replacement only after checking whether the device is faulty or unsuitable for the application. Damaged insulation, accumulated leakage and wiring issues can also cause operation. Do not remove protection as a shortcut.

02What insulation resistance is acceptable?+

Use the equipment instructions, test voltage, temperature and applicable requirements. There is no single acceptance value in this article for every heater.

03Does producing heat prove that the element is healthy?+

No. An element may still heat while having insulation damage or another defect. Use the protection record and inspection findings together.
