01Compare the construction
Mica bands use mica insulation and generally have a slim profile. If the existing guard has little clearance, check a like-for-like replacement first.
Ceramic bands commonly use segmented ceramic insulation around the heating element and may have an insulation layer. Compare the actual model if the zone has specific temperature or heat-loss requirements.
02Check the operating conditions
Review the zone temperature, startup frequency, insulation and the supplier’s permitted watt density. Material names alone do not establish the rating.
If the zone uses forced-air cooling, a change in insulation can change how quickly it cools. Check the existing cooling arrangement before specifying a replacement.
03Measure the available space
Record barrel outside diameter, usable width, clamp clearance, sensor holes and lead direction. If the heater must come off sideways, state that before ordering.
Compare voltage and wattage separately. Have maintenance check the control circuit and original wiring diagram before changing heater type or rating.
04Compare results in the same zone
Use the original heat-up trend, cycling pattern and failure history as a reference. If poor contact damaged the old heater, check the mounting surface and clamp before changing materials.
Keep a nameplate photo and a picture of the installed terminals. They can save another round of measurements at the next replacement.
